Ensete Ventricosum ‘Maurelii’ -Red Abyssinian Bananas
Ensete ventricosum ‘Maurelii’, also know as Abyssinian banana or Blood Bananas, is a relative of the Banana family (Musa spp.) but this species does not fruit. This banana-like plant has large paddle-shaped leaves, which range in color from deep claret brown to red-purple to pale green, produced from the center of the plant, with thick midribs bright red beneath. Ensete ventricosum ‘Maurelii’ is best grown in containers, or as tropical houseplant.. For certain areas, this can be planted on the ground as Ensete ventricosum ‘Maurelii is hardy to -6C.
Excellent as a bog plant or a tropical container plant, Blood banana should be grown in full sun partcial shade in rich, well-drained but moist soil. Another excellent substitute with the highly sought, and very difficult to grow variegated Banana!
